Hawaii is home to some of the world’s most diverse and unique ecosystems, with numerous plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth.
However, the introduction of non-native species to the islands has had a devastating impact on these fragile ecosystems, with many native species now at risk of extinction.
In particular, native pollinators and the plants they rely on are under threat, with habitat loss and invasive species posing significant challenges.
Fortunately, there are opportunities to support the conservation and restoration of Hawaii’s native pollinators and plants. By funding the purchase of native plants and materials needed for habitat restoration, we can help provide a lifeline for endangered species and give them a chance to recover.
One of the key areas where support is urgently needed is the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, located on the windward slopes of Mauna Kea.
This area contains some of the last remaining stands of native montane rainforest in Hawaii and is home to a range of critically endangered species, including seven birds, one insect, one mammal, and 20 plants found nowhere else in the world. By supporting initiatives to restore habitat in this area, we can help protect these vital species and safeguard their future survival.
